Reception & Mutual Reception
How Planets Host, Shield, and Lend Strength
In astrology, reception happens when one planet occupies a place where another planet holds dignity, and the two are connected by an aspect: the dignified planet receives the visitor — hosts it, takes responsibility for it, lends it standing. In mutual reception, each planet sits in the other’s dignities, binding the pair into something close to a single working unit. Medieval astrologers ranked these connections above ordinary aspects — for good reason: reception changes not just how two planets interact, but what they are willing to do for each other.
What Is Reception?
Picture a guest arriving at someone’s house. The Moon in Scorpio aspecting Mars is a guest standing in Mars’s home — Scorpio is Mars’s domicile — so Mars receives the Moon: the host acknowledges the guest and takes her in. Reception requires two things: an aspect between the planets, and dignity — the host must rule the visitor’s position by domicile or exaltation, or by any two of the three minor dignities combined (triplicity, terms, face — one alone is too thin a claim to host on). Reception is often one-way: in that same Scorpio meeting, the sign gives the Moon no dignity over Mars, so the Moon cannot receive him back. Chart software lists receptions for you — the craft is in reading what they mean.
What Is Mutual Reception?
Mutual reception doubles the bond: each planet stands in the other’s dignities. The Moon in Scorpio with Mars in Taurus is the classic shape — the Moon in Mars’s domicile, Mars in the Moon’s exaltation. The medieval tradition grades these connections by strength: mutual reception with an aspect ranks first, reception second, mutual reception without an aspect third — and only then come ordinary conjunctions and the other aspects. The striking consequence: two planets in mutual reception are bound even with no aspect at all. A planet that looks isolated — void of aspects — may in fact be wired into the chart through its receptions, sharing in everything its partner touches.
What Does Reception Actually Do?
Three mechanics cover most of it. Borrowed fortune: bound planets share each other’s support — a struggling chart ruler in mutual reception with a well-supported Mars effectively inherits Mars’s allies, the way a person of modest means rises through a powerful partner’s connections. The malefic’s price: the same bond cuts both ways — mixing with a strong malefic brings its gifts and its wounds; the tradition is blunt that being received by a malefic is still being touched by one. The host shields the guest: a planet that receives another stands in front of it — afflictions aimed at the guest strike the host first, the way you absorb the troubles of anyone you’ve taken under your roof. Who receives whom, then, is a map of who is willing to give, who benefits, and who ends up carrying whom.
The Dignity Tables — Quick Reference
Checking a reception means checking dignity, so here is the full kit. Remember the bar: domicile or exaltation qualifies on its own; the minor dignities only qualify two together.

How to Read Receptions in Your Chart
Start with your chart ruler: what it receives shows what you willingly spend yourself on — a chart ruler receiving the 10th lord wants achievement; receiving the 12th lord is the classic signature of a mind drawn to the hidden and the mystical. Then run the people houses — the lords of the 1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th (self, parents, partner) and the 2nd (your resources): receptions among them sketch who supports whom in your life, and in which direction the generosity flows. As always, condition decides the outcome — receiving a planet under heavy affliction means signing up to carry it. Reception is read on top of the dignity map, never instead of the whole chart.
