Bringing the Oldest Astrology Back to Life

Chris Brennan (born 1984) is one of the leading voices in the modern revival of Hellenistic astrology — the original system, born in the Mediterranean world around the 1st century BCE, that first produced the natal chart as we know it. Through a hugely popular podcast and a landmark reference book, he has done more than almost anyone of his generation to return the ancient techniques to everyday practice.

The Astrology Podcast

In 2012 Brennan launched The Astrology Podcast, a weekly show on the history, philosophy, and techniques of the craft. With hundreds of episodes and a wide roster of guests, it became one of the most listened-to astrology programs in the world — a serious, well-researched forum that helped raise the standard of public conversation about astrology.

Hellenistic Astrology: The Study of Fate and Fortune

His 2017 book, Hellenistic Astrology: The Study of Fate and Fortune, is a comprehensive reconstruction of the ancient system — its history, its philosophy, and its methods. It has become a standard reference for students of traditional astrology and a gateway through which many readers first meet the older layers of the craft.

Reviving Ancient Technique

Brennan trained in the lineage of Project Hindsight, studying with the translator Robert Schmidt, and at Kepler College. Much of his teaching recovers techniques that modern astrology had forgotten:

  • Sect — whether a chart is born by day or by night, and how that sorts the planets.

  • Annual profections — a simple, powerful timing method that activates one house each year.

  • Zodiacal releasing — a time-lord technique for the major chapters of a life.

  • Dignity and the planetary joys — the older logic of planetary strength.

The Question of Fate

Brennan's work keeps returning to the oldest question in astrology: how much is fated, and how much is free? Rather than flatten the tension, he treats it as the living heart of the tradition — the reason the ancients called the natal chart a study of fate and fortune rather than a list of fixed outcomes.

Legacy

By pairing rigorous historical scholarship with a generous, accessible public voice, Chris Brennan has helped a whole generation rediscover where astrology came from. For anyone drawn to the classical techniques used across this site, his podcast and book are among the best places to go deeper.
