Steven Forrest (born 1949) is a pioneer of evolutionary astrology, an approach that reads the birth chart as a map of the soul's growth across time. More than almost any other modern astrologer, he made that vision warm, lyrical, and genuinely usable — and he placed free will at its very center.

The Inner Sky

His first and best-known book, The Inner Sky, introduced a generation of readers to a humane, psychologically rich astrology written in plain, beautiful language. Where older textbooks cataloged fixed traits, Forrest offered the chart as a set of growth choices — each placement a question the soul is here to work on.

Evolutionary Astrology and the Nodes

At the heart of Forrest's method are the lunar nodes. He reads the South Node as the soul's deep past and habitual patterns, and the North Node as its evolutionary intention — the direction of growth in this life. His Yesterday's Sky develops this into a full technique for reading the chart as the latest chapter in a longer story.

Free Will at the Center

Forrest is emphatic that the chart describes potential, not destiny. Every placement, he teaches, can be lived at a higher or a lower octave; the work of astrology is to show the choices, not to predict the outcome. This insistence on agency — that we are participants, never prisoners, of our charts — is the moral signature of his whole body of work.

His many books include The Changing Sky, The Book of Pluto, The Book of the Moon, and The Nodes. He has taught for decades through a long-running apprenticeship program, training astrologers around the world, and in 1985 received the PAI Award for Outstanding Contribution to Astrology.
